Your look, one piece at a time

It's that time again-spring is just around the corner, and while for some that means sunnier days, birds chirping, spring break or one last semester at Duke, others are holding their breath in anticipation of Spring Fashion 2006. Of course I understand that the new designer collections are not on the top of every student's priority list, but that is no excuse to ignore what this season's trends have to offer. So remember that your look is just that: your look. It's your chance to express yourself, and it's my job to give you some clues for what's ahead. My advice? Have fun this spring, because there is nothing sensible about these styles.

My goal is to break down the trends so you don't end up over-spending or over-looking when piecing together a new wardrobe. Fashion should be fun and manageable, and luckily for you-and me-this season offers a wide range of styles that can be mixed, matched and thrown together at a moment's notice. But there's a catch (there's always a catch): this season, looks are largely dependent on several key items. Still, I'm fairly confident that if you don't own some of them already, the seven articles below and on Meredith to the right are certainly ones you'll want to have anyway....

1- Tailored Jacket

Like the structured look of seasons past but light-weight and bold colors-try jewel tones like emerald, ruby or amethyst. If that's not your thing, go for a crisp white-a very important color this spring.

2 - White Blouse

On the runway it appeared lacey, full of ruffles and oversized. You can wear it with a little less drama and still look just as classy. Try a new cut or collar; it's a piece that never, ever goes out.

3 - Peep-Toe Pumps

Try a pair in this season's "it" material: patent leather. The top fashion houses used it for everything from jewelry to purses, but, for the everyday girl, wear it on your feet.

4 - Flirty Dress

Lift the length and go for light fabric like chiffon. The key word here is ethereal, not tight. Look grown-up, not like you're going to a middle school dance. For a more everyday look, an A-Line mini-dress will do.

5 - Animal Prints

Sounds intimidating, but go for it with a positive attitude and you'll be very pleased with the results. If you're not ready for a full commitment, try the print in a belt or as the lining of a jacket.

6 - Wood Wedges & Rope

The sandal of the moment-sky high and strappy. Gold tones abound, but neutrals go with everything too. Rope is the surprising accessory of Spring, as a belt or the straps on your shoes.

7 - Cigarette Pants

This new cut of "skinny jeans" with a tighter fit at the bottom and slightly cropped is very trendy. If that sounds like too much, extra slouchy slacks will also make a big appearance this season.
