NAME Elizabeth Spiers
PROFESSION Editor, mediabistro.com
HOME BASE NYC
AGE 28
Spiers (pronounced SPY-ers) wanted to turn into just that—a CIA op. The ’99 Trinity grad had studied Arabic and written a paper on the ethics of terrorism, but she ended up doing what most Duke girls from Wetumpka, Alabama end up doing with a public policy degree: working on Wall Street.
She dabbled in dot-com, was a damn good hedge fund analyst, became the snark and gossip queen of New York writing the must-read media blog Gawker, freelanced on the side, then landed a primo gig at New York magazine.
“Kind of bored” there, the self-proclaimed work-aholic—duh—landed at the media world’s job-hunting hub, mediabistro.com.
“What’s funny is I don’t really consider myself a career expert,” Spiers says.
What’s next? A novel about making it in the Big Apple, natch.
