NAME John Mack
PROFESSION Chair & CEO, Morgan Stanley
HOME BASE Wall Street
AGE 60
The son of Lebanese immigrants and a former Duke football player is returning to the top of Wall Street.
Mack, a 1968 Trinity grad, trustee and mega-donor, is back at the helm of Morgan Stanley, the prestigious financial services firm where he spent the majority of his career. He has a formidable task ahead of him: quelling egos and in-fighting, stopping the flow of talent to competitors and deciding whether the bank should be a behemoth financial supermarket or a more nimble firm that caters to corporations and the wealthy—all of which did-in his predecessor.
Former Duke President Nan Keohane describes Mack as a leader eager to put forth an idea before a consensus emerges but equally ready to let others respond.
And Duke’s future with Mack looks bright, too: In the past six years, the Macks have given over $20 million to support everything from medicine to financial aid.
