Letters to the Editor: Top Duke wannabe admits defeat

I write to congratulate Duke University on a great win in what will certainly be an ESPN instant classic. I hope you got your tuition dollars' worth. Your basketball players displayed excellent sportsmanship, as would be expected from a team coached by the exalted namesake of the Coach K Center of Leadership and Ethics in the School of Fuqua. You and yours back in New Jersey should be very proud of the great performance you put so much time and effort into watching. I would expect nothing less from a team whose name comes from the great and formidable French fighters, "Les Diables Bleus," a group whose daring and monumental courage allowed them to soundly defeat all their foes in WWI--and when I say "all," I mean "none at all." I hope each and every Duke student takes pride in this distinguished heritage.

Your victory harkens back to that glorious era of the "distinctive blue uniform with flowing cape and jaunty beret that captured public imagination." My respect for you burns like a bench in the night. Good game. Go forth with your victory, but know that on March 6 it will ring as false as a Gothic arch built in the 1930s. We will battle the forces of darkness, and emerge back into the clear blue light as champions. Leave the jaunty berets at home. Again, well played.

See you on Franklin Street.
