This weekend, head coach Ted Roof hopes to run away with some of the nation's fastest football players.
At least 20 prospects are visiting the Gothic Wonderland in what appears to be Roof's biggest recruiting weekend to date. Headlining the list of attending players are top 100 wide receivers Chancellor Young and Corey Thompson.
Young, a Seattle, Wash. native, is believed to be one of the fastest players on the West Coast. A standout safety and wide receiver, He is ranked by theinsiders.com as the 53rd best receiver prospect in the nation. He was one of four Washington players selected to play in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio, Texas.
Young also runs track and, according to coach Monte Kohler, won the 100- and 200-meter dashes in the state track meet as a junior.
"He does a lot of things well: he's big, he's strong, and he's fast," Kohler said. "He's going to be a great college football player, not only because of his athletic ability but also because of the type of person he is."
Young, who is the son of former NFL tight end Charlie Young, has received scholarship offers from Duke, Washington, Oregon, and Notre Dame. According to Kohler, he has also received strong interest from UCLA and co-national champions USC.
Thompson, an Atlanta, Ga. speedster, is ranked as the 87th best WR prospect in the nation. Also a track star, Thompson boasts a 4.3 40-yard dash time and one of the highest kick return averages in the state of Georgia according to coach Gary Cantrell.
"[Thompson's] got a lot of speed," theinsiders.com recruiting analyst Scott Kennedy said. "He was one of the top players in the [Georgia] North-South All-Star Game."
"He's a hard worker," Cantrell added. "He does everything he needs to do to put himself in a position to be successful."
Thompson, who has a brother at Vanderbilt, has received scholarship offers from Duke, Auburn, Marshall, Wake Forest, and Wisconsin.
In addition to the two speedsters, Duke will also be receiving visits from coveted Brooklyn, N.Y. offensive lineman Izzy Bauta and Buford, GA defensive tackle Neil Brown. Bauta, whose brother Lavdrim is a sophomore lineman at Duke, has received offers from Ohio State, Duke, Maryland, Rutgers, and South Florida. Brown has received offers from Nebraska, Tennessee, North Carolina, Michigan State, Kentucky, and Ole Miss.
