I have followed with increasing dismay the manner in which the ACC expansion has been pursued.
While there is a continuing attempt to justify the outcome, two fundamental questions have not been addressed.
First, by gutting the Big East, Duke has been a party to an action that violates all norms of decent and collegial behaviour. How does this fit in with Duke's institutional character and standards?
Second, how does the path that has been taken advance the cause of intercollegiate athletic reform? In this context, the absence of a substantial debate of this issue involving the broad academic community is deeply disappointing and frustrating.
