'Keohane Quad' wins CC support

Campus Council unanimously approved a resolution Thursday night recommending that the West-Edens Link be renamed Keohane Quadrangle at the conclusion of President Nan Keohane's tenure.

Sophomore Chris Kallmeyer, campus council treasurer, presented the resolution to the residential life and programming body after discussions with the executive board and other members.

"It just fell upon me to write the resolution and voice the opinion of a lot of people on campus," Kallmeyer said. "She's given an incredible contribution to the residential community and so it's only fitting that we name a quad that was actually built under her tenure after her."

Campus Council President Anthony Vitarelli said the adopted resolution would be forwarded to Vice President of Student Affairs Larry Moneta and Executive Vice President Tallman Trask for review. The University's Board of Trustees must approve the naming of any building on campus, Senior Vice President for Public Affairs and Government Relations John Burness said.

"President Keohane is extremely humble but I hope she appreciates this gesture of our gratitude for all she has done for our campus," Vitarelli, a junior, said. "Like Campus Council, I think the Board [of Trustees] recognizes President Keohane's accomplishments."

The council also discussed folding cable and telephone costs into the dormitory housing room fee. The resolution, which will be voted upon in an upcoming meeting, seeks to lower the fees students pay for cable and telephone services by automatically including them in the room fee, with an opt-out system for students wishing not to receive them. The program would save students who use television and telephone services about $300 per room.

Council ad-hoc member and senior Max Perkins described the upcoming A.M. Mayhem event to be held Oct. 17 in Cameron Indoor Stadium, which the Council will sponsor in conjunction with Duke Student Government, Duke University Union and the Krzyzewskiville line monitors. The night will feature deejays, a band, free food, and a midnight basketball practice by the men's team, kicking off basketball season.

Quad representatives also discussed various programming activities they are planning for their respective areas of campus, including community service programs, social gatherings and the distribution of items for students ranging from Nalgene bottles to boxer shorts with a quad logo.
