Man dozes at library, cited
An employee at Perkins Library reported Oct. 3 that he believed there was a suspicious person sleeping in the library. Officers searched the area and found a person fitting the description, one Miko Wilkins of 1104 Arnette Ave. He was issued a citation for second-degree trespassing after a records check showed that he had been issued trespassing warnings in 1997 and 2001. His court date is set for Nov. 12. Wilkins could not be reached for comment.
East Union employee allegedly hoards beverages
An employee at the East Campus Union reported Oct. 5 that another employee was taking orange juice and soda from the kitchen and hiding it outside near a dumpster. The employee reported this action to his supervisor, who contacted police. The items taken were valued at $22.50.
The suspect was placed on administrative leave pending completion of the investigation.
Solicitor unlicensed to sell, drive
Duke police officers responded to the front of Perkins Library Sept. 30 at 9:41 p.m. in reference to an unauthorized person selling magazines. Subsequent investigation revealed that the solicitor was to be picked up on East Campus later by three other solicitors. The driver of the vehicle, Brandiee Moniquee Sanchez, DOB June 1, 1980, of 834 Farmers Lane, Bakersfield, Calif., was unable to produce a driver's license and was charged with operating a motor vehicle without a license.
She was placed under a $500 unsecured bond, given a court date of Oct. 24 and expelled from campus along with the other three solicitors. Sanchez could not be reached for comment.
Permit stolen
An employee reported that between 10:20 a.m. and 4 p.m. Sept. 26, someone entered his secured vehicle while it was parked in the Highway 751 parking lot and stole his parking permit. There were no signs of forced entry.
Cologne thief scores jackpot
An employee reported the theft of $350 worth of colognes that he had left at the information desk in the lobby of Duke Hospital between 5:45 a.m. and 4 p.m. Oct. 2.
Washington Duke tools stolen
A contractor reported break-ins to construction trailers at the Washington Duke Inn construction site between 3 p.m. Oct. 5 and 8 a.m. Oct. 6. The perpetrators attempted to enter three trailers on the site but were only successful at one, which they accessed by cutting a lock on the door. Locks were also cut on two other trailers but no entry was made. The contractor reported that a $200 DeWalt cordless drill, a $400 Partner 14" chop saw, a $70 DeWalt 3/8 electric drill, a $200 Bosch hammer drill, a $100 Skill saw, a $150 battery and a charger for a Craftsman cordless drill were stolen in the break-in.
Afternoon snack enjoyed
A student reported that between 1:30 p.m. and 1:50 p.m. Oct. 2, someone stole her DukeCard while she was in Perkins Library. The card was then used to make vending machine purchases.
Thief makes cash withdrawal from purse
A visitor reported that between 7 a.m. and noon Sept. 30, she left her unsecured purse in the 9300 lounge of Duke Hospital North. When she returned, she discovered that $150 in cash had been taken from her purse.
Wallet snatched from cath lab
An employee reported that between 7 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Oct. 1, she left her unsecured duffel bag containing her wallet in the Adult Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory, at 7400 Duke Hospital North. When she returned, she discovered that her $12 wallet containing $60 in cash had been stolen.
Laptop grabbed from Fuqua
An employee reported that between 5:30 p.m. Sept. 30 and 8:20 a.m. Oct. 1, someone stole his $2,500 IBM laptop computer--type 2672-JHU, serial number 99GBRX8, model X31--from his desk in the Fuqua School of Business.
Charger lifted
A patient reported that between 9:30 a.m. and 9 p.m. Oct. 1, someone entered her room at 5100 Duke Hospital North and stole her $20 Alltel cellular telephone charger.
Purse pulled from White Zone
A visitor reported that between 8:30 and 11 a.m. Oct. 2, she left her $25 pocketbook, containing $24 in cash, a credit card, a driver's license, a Social Security card and keys in the hallway under a cart in the White Zone sub-basement in Duke Hospital South. When she returned, her pocketbook was missing.
Voice recorder taken
An employee reported that between 12:30 and 1:30 p.m. Oct. 2, someone entered the house staff locker room at 3400 Duke Hospital North and stole his $400 silver and gray digital voice recorder, serial number RDP83930050795, model number DS-3000.
Backpacked hauled out of Fuqua
A student reported that his backpack was stolen from a team room at the Fuqua School of Business Oct. 2. The student said he left the backpack in the room at 10:10 a.m. and returned at 10:35 a.m. to find it missing. The backpack and the course work papers and two binders it contained are valued at $145.
Car broken into on Towerview
Following a report from a student, officers arrived at Towerview Road to find a 1995 Honda with damage to the right rear window. The owner came to the scene and reported that he had parked his vehicle there at 5 p.m. Oct. 3. In addition to the $500 broken window, a $125 combination radio and compact disc player was stolen.
Vending machine sacked
An employee reported damage to a vending machine in women's rest room 4029T in the Duke Clinics building at 8:55 a.m. Oct. 3. The machine suffered $100 in damage. An unknown quantity of products and money from the machine may have been taken.
Purse disappears before morning
A visitor reported that her purse was stolen sometime during the night of Oct. 4 from the waiting room of 2300 Duke Hospital. The alleged victim reported that she and her family were sleeping in the waiting room and she noticed that her purse was missing when she awoke around midnight. The purse and its contents are valued at $110.
WEL bike vandalized
A student reported that sometime between 2:30 p.m. Oct. 5 and 10 a.m. Oct. 6, someone broke the plastic lock holder from his bike and caused $35 in damage to the tires of his bicycle, which was locked to a rack at the West-Edens Link.
Fire extinguisher disappears, replaced
A student in House M reported Oct. 6 at 9 p.m. that a $60 fire extinguisher was missing from its mount. The item was last seen in place Oct. 3 at 5 p.m., and was replaced by Duke Police officers.
