Alcohol-fueled fracas results in charges

Duke University Police Department officers responded to 1915 Erwin Rd. Sept. 28 at 3:29 a.m. in reference to a noise complaint and possible fight. Upon arrival to the area, several individuals were observed and one person fled on foot toward Erwin Road. Two other individuals were observed near a vehicle. One was visibly upset, shouting into a cellular telephone and smelling of alcohol.




Woman absconds with parking pass
A student reported that between the hours of 4:55 p.m. and 5:03 p.m. Sept. 28, a light-colored sedan operated by a white, brown-haired female wearing a gray T-shirt was in front of her attempting to get into the Blue Zone parking lot. The student said the female asked her if she could use her parking pass to open the gate. She gave the female the pass, which was number BLU41790, Duke/2004. The female drove her sedan into the lot but did not stop to return the pass, and she was unable to follow her into the lot.

Man packs pistol in Hospital
Mario A. Heywood, DOB July 2, 1946, of 125 Myrtle Grove Road, New Bern, N.C., came through the metal screening area of the Emergency Department Sept. 28 at 9:44 p.m. with a pistol in his backpack. He was charged with having a weapon on campus and given an Oct. 13 court date. Heywood could not be reached for comment.

Earnhardt, animal trinkets stolen
An employee reported that while her vehicle was parked at the Medical Records building on West Pettigrew Street Sept. 28, someone broke out a $100 window and stole her $5 Dale Earnhardt miniature car, $5 Dale Earnhardt walkie-talkies, $5 glass dolphin figurine and $5 pig windchime.

Vending machine pried
An employee reported damage to a vending machine outside the Doris Duke Building in the Sarah P. Duke Gardens. The machine was last seen in good condition at 6 p.m. Sept. 22. The employee reported that he found the vending machine pried open when he came to work Sept. 23, and damage is estimated at $403.

Subaru invaded, credit card used
A student reported that her 1997 Subaru was broken into at Wallace Wade Stadium sometime after noon Sept. 22. Around 9 p.m., the student received a call from her credit card company notifying her of suspicious charges. The student checked her vehicle and found that someone had entered her car and taken her wallet, containing cash and credit cards valued at $40. No damage to the vehicle was reported.

Crime statistics released
The Annual Campus Security Report includes statistics for the previous three years concerning reported crimes that occurred on campus, in certain off-campus buildings or property owned or controlled by Duke University and on public property within or immediately adjacent to and accessible from the campus. The report also includes institutional policies concerning campus security, such as policies concerning alcohol and drug use, crime prevention, the reporting of crimes, sexual assault, and other matters.
