Med student among those cited for noise

Three residents of 206 Watts St. were issued citations by Durham police Sept. 22. for creating an unreasonable and loud gathering to disturb the peace and quiet of the neighborhood, one of several alleged noise ordinance violations in recent days.

Medical student Thorsten P. Sunberg, DOB Jan. 7, 1979, pointed out that the clientele of the party was not particularly rowdy. "It was a party of medical students and law students. We're all 25 years old; we weren't being disruptive," he said. "The citing officers actually didn't even tell us who gave a noise complaint. We don't even think anyone complained."

Wayne Kwame Alexander, 24, a law student at North Carolina Central University, said he objected to the charges. "I thought they were unfounded and I think the citations are excessive," he said. "Members of the neighborhood should have the ability to entertain in a reasonable manner, and I felt we had definitely conducted ourselves in a reasonable manner."

Ray Mitchell Parrish, 24, agreed. "I felt that the way the charges were written, that's not exactly the way I felt like it happened," he said. "We had moved everything inside and I didn't think there was a problem or a reason for a noise complaint."
