Women's golf preps for Murphey

After last weekend's rain-soaked victory at the Bryan National Collegiate golf tournament, the top-ranked women's golf team is hoping for better weather and similar results when they travel to Athens, Ga., this weekend. The defending national champion Blue Devils are competing in the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic, hosted by the University of Georgia.

"[The team has been working on] mostly schoolwork - we got back Sunday, and we've had the team touching up and doing schoolwork this week," head coach Dan Brooks said. "But each of them probably spent two or three hours a day on the course, also."

The hard work will hopefully pay off for Brooks' squad, as they face what he calls a "strong field," of Southern schools, including national title contenders Auburn, Georgia, Oklahoma State, and defending tournament champion Florida. Duke did not enter the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic last year, but won the competition the last time it entered, in 2001.

The work was mainly to loosen up the team, which has been facing tournaments nearly every weekend.

"We don't really have specific technical goals for this week," Brooks said. "Just the usual - one shot at a time. These things are important in golf."

The team hasn't taken to the fairways since Saturday, when it finished up the second round at the Bryan National. The second round proved to be the last for the Blue Devils, as rain canceled the remainder of the tournament. The weather was well-timed for Brooks' squad, which took home a win on the strength of a four-stroke lead at the close of play Saturday.

"This one is no different," Brooks said. "We're going to shoot for the win. With a team this talented, we won't feel successful if we don't win."

The Blue Devils take to the course today, and the tournament will last until Sunday.
