He1s a Clark Kent wannabe with a Radiohead complex; she1s a drama major addicted to lip-gloss. Together they are 3Unseen Screen,2 the duo hitting up Blockbusters around the country. Their goal is simple: to find the most overachieving, underrated movies around. They1ve picked the videos they want you to see. Now comes the hard part
ROMANCE:
A: Beautiful Girls: Natalie Portman shines as the little Lolita of the neighborhood among 20-somethings not quite as mature in love.
B: Moonlight and Valentino:
TEEN:
A: Say Anything: John Cusack as lovable high-school slacker who survives heartbreak and car-sex to score the girl of his dreams.
B: Better Off Dead: John Cusack as a lovable high-school slacker who survives heartbreak and a ski race to score the girl of his dreams.
POLITICAL:
A: Bob Roberts: Folk singer runs for Congress, rigs election in Tim Robbins satire.
B: Dave: Presidential look-alike becomes the president in warm-hearted and rewatchable Kevin Kline comedy.
SO BAD IT1S GOOD:
A: Bachelor Party: Tom Hanks before respectability. Drugs, hookers, and a penis in a hot dog<obviously this is a chick flick.
B: A Knight1s Tale: Badly written, predictable, and way too much fun. Paul Bettany and Laura Fraser steal every scene in this almost-intelligent action flick.
MUST-SEE FOR COLLEGE KIDS:
A: Before Sunrise: Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy fall in love with each other, and we fall in love with them, all before the crack of dawn<the well-written journey of college kids finding a connection.
B: The Truman Show < It1s definitely not under the radar, but few other movies express the difficulties<and the jubilation<of leaving home better. When he realizes it1s all a sham... beautiful.
