he quintissential New Orleans jazz band--The Dirty Dozen Brass Band--performs in Page Auditorium Sunday for one night of red hot rhythm and blues just in time for Fat Tuesday. This dirty dozen (actually an octuplet) has been making noise for almost 25 years with no end in sight.
The band's sound is influenced by everything from R&B to be-bop and each song is performed as an experiment.
Trumpeter and bandleader Gregory Davis said, "The concept for the Dirty Dozen is to play and experiment with all types of music. We will take a song--and not worry if it is a jazz song or any particular type of song--we'll just take a song and see what we can do with it as The Dirty Dozen."
This kind of zest for anything musical has lead the band across the globe and back again, once performing 72 shows in 90 days. Aside from playing every major jazz festival, the group won CMJ's Album of the Year, received five star ratings from Downbeat and has recorded with the likes of Dizzy Gillespie and Elvis Costello.
Hosting a band with such a vivid and storied past in the jazz field will undoubtedly prove delightful for the Duke campus. Don't miss the Dozen!
