Club Cafe

Sick and tired of the same old Duke scene? Feel like if you've been to one campus art event you've been to them all? Then think about getting off campus for a taste of CafZ DADA.

But don't expect to see Dadaists straight from 1920's Europe at this cafe. In fact, CafZ DADA isn't actually a cafe at all. This monthly event takes place at different venues in Durham and "DADA" stands for Durham Association for Downtown Arts.

The monthly cabaret provides an outlet for Durham's artistically minded. It may not be evident from the industrial appearance of downtown, but unbeknownst to the Duke community, Durham is home to many of the state's finest artists. Each month, filmmakers, poets, dancers, actors, visual artists and musicians take the stage for a night of guaranteed pleasure that will fulfill all creative needs. Tickets are free to the public, though there is a suggested donation at the door.

Tonight at 7pm at the Walltown Children's Theater off Club Boulevard, artists will perform as part of CafZ DADA #3. This month's show will feature some of the community's best children's performers and future child stars who will take the stage and dazzle you with their talent. This month CafZ DADA is geared more towards those who are still too small to ride rollercoasters, but what adult doesn't need to regress to their childhood for a while? Especially during midterms.

But, if kiddy fun is not for you, try the Durham Bands Showcase Saturday night at 9pm when the people of CafZ DADA will kick off their brand new band series featuring three Durham-based groups. This month the show will be at Ringside on Main Street downtown. The bands are: Mais Oui--an all-female punk band; Malt Swagger--a "suit-wearin" instrumental band; and Little Miss Messy--classified as "indy-pop-punk." Tickets for this multimedia evening are just $7 at the door: That's the price of a movie ticket.

Whichever event you choose, CafZ DADA offers a great escape from the monotony of everyday Duke.
