Brand, Chausiriporn named finalists for Sullivan Award

Elton Brand and Jenny Chuasiriporn were among 11 amateur athletes named finalists for the 69th Annual James E. Sullivan Memorial Award on Dec. 16. The award honors athletes who have achieved athletic excellence, exhibited leadership, character, sportsmanship and the ideals of amateurism.

The winner will be announced in mid-February. Voting is conducted by the AAU Board of Directors, the United States Olympic Committee Board of Directors, the AAU Sullivan Award Committee and members of the sports media.

Georgia Tech is also represented by two finalists, men's golfer Matt Kuchar and track star Angelo Taylor.

Schill, Cowie earn preseason honors: Baseball players Vaughn Schill and Stephen Cowie have both received preseason All-American honors. Schill, a junior shortstop, was named to the Baseball America first team and Collegiate Baseball's third team. He hit .367 last season with 14 home runs and 48 RBIs.

Collegiate Baseball also recognized Cowie, a righthanded pitcher, on its third team. The senior led the Blue Devils last year with an 11-2 record and 2.85 ERA.

Baseball signs seven: Coach Steve Traylor announced in mid-December the signing of seven high school players to letters of intent. The Class of 2003 will be comprised of two pitchers, three infielders, an outfielder and a catcher.

Headlining the list of signees is Durham native Jeff Alleva, the son of Duke athletic director Joe Alleva and brother of sophomore J.D. Alleva. Alleva, an all-state righthanded pitcher, was 9-1 last season with a 2.14 ERA and 80 strikeouts. He also hit .410 while earning Pac-6 Conference Player of the Year honors.

Women's tennis signs two: Coach Jamie Ashworth has signed two recruits to join the women's tennis team in the fall. Katie Granson, a native of Bethlehem, Pa., and Prim Siripipat, who attends Saddlebrook Academy in Wesley Chapel, Fla., are both ranked in the top 15 in the USTA Junior poll.
