The first day after the NCAA announces its tournament draw, teams are supposed to be preparing for this weekend's first and second rounds. But Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski still couldn't help but worry about his point guard.
Senior Steve Wojciechowski is still recovering after collapsing in the team shower following Sunday's Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament finals in Greensboro, N.C. He had to be rehydrated intravenously.
"The main topic on my mind is Steve," said Krzyzewski at a press conference Monday afternoon at Cameron Indoor Stadium. "We were really concerned yesterday after the ballgame. I really want to thank the EMS people at Greensboro for the immediate attention he got after he collapsed in the shower."
Kevin Speer and Dave Englehardt, members of the Duke medical staff, worked for approximately an hour to rehydrate Wojciechowski, who played in all three games over the weekend despite being ill with the flu.
"For me, it was real scary because he was on the shower floor for over an hour, taking 4 and 1/2 liters of fluid," Krzyzewski said. "He was feeling well enough to make the bus trip last night and we kept an eye on him. Today, he's feeling better. He feels like he's been through a 15-round fight.
"We need to have that kid well, at his best. He means so much to this group."
Wojciechowski stayed at the Washington Duke hotel last night with the rest of the team and was in Cameron briefly on Monday. Krzyzewski gave the team the day off yesterday before returning to practice today. Wojciechowski has not yet decided when he'll be able to actively participate in practice.
"I'm not sure when he'll practice, that will be a day-to-day thing," Krzyzewski said. "Hopefully, he'll practice on Wednesday."
That would give Wojciechowski one practice in Durham before the Blue Devils leave Thursday for Lexington, Ky., to take on Radford this Friday. After struggling on the offensive end of the floor in three straight games at the ACC Tournament, Duke has plenty to work through before Friday's opening-round game with the No. 16 seed Highlanders.
"We're looking forward to getting back to practice to get better," Krzyzewski said. "It was obvious that in Greensboro, for whatever reason, our offense was not good. It's amazing that we're able to advance to [Sunday's] game shooting 35 percent from the floor. That put so much pressure on our defense."
Note: Duke's game against Radford is set for a 10 p.m. EST tipoff. Should the Blue Devils advance, their game Sunday will begin shortly after noon EST.
