I appreciate T. M. Murali's reply to my letter about the status of women around the world. He knows the history of India much better than I do, and his criticism of my remarks displayed an admirable maturity of tone. I am sorry, however, that he found racist implications in my reference to the British "masters" of India. I only meant to say that they were the supreme authority at the time suttee (sati) was outlawed throughout the land.
