The Blue Devils were not about to fall victim to two big upsets in one week, but they did not perform to their expectations last night against Georgia Southern.

No. 11 Duke (2-1) defeated the Eagles 69-42 Thursday in Cameron Indoor Stadium behind a dominant first half. The second half, though, was disappointing, especially considering Duke’s lofty national ranking.

Duke first met Georgia Southern Jan. 9, 1982 in Statesboro, Ga., with the Eagles narowly edging out the Blue Devils 64-58. Two seasons later, however, Duke delivered a victory at the USF Holiday Classic in Tampa, Fla., tying the short-lived rivalry at one win apiece.

Twenty-five years later, the two teams are ready to battle it out again.

Duke headed to Texas looking for revenge against the team that knocked it out of the the 2008 NCAA Tournament, but instead left the Lone Star State with a similar outcome.

After breezing past Houston Baptist 104-35 in their season opener, the No. 6 Blue Devils were unable to maintain their momentum against Texas A&M, falling to the Aggies 95-77 Sunday at Reed Arena in College Station, Texas.

When traveling to an away game, teams do not usually expect an exceedingly warm reception. The Blue Devils, however, received just that, as they kick off their regular season in Houston—the hometown of junior Karima Christmas.

The Seawolves made the long journey from Anchorage, Alaska to play the Blue Devils in Cameron Indoor Stadium, but a balanced offensive attack and a staunch defense resulted in an overwhelming Duke victory. The Blue Devils had five players score in double digits and won their final exhibition contest, 100-32.

Duke found plenty of different ways to score points Thursday against Wingate, but its high-intensity play was perhaps more defined by the variety of ways in which the Bulldogs committed their astounding 41 turnovers: five-second calls, shot clock violations, steals off the dribble, blocked shots and intercepted passes.

This Blue Devil onslaught culminated in a resounding 99-31 victory at Cameron Indoor Stadium in Duke’s first and only exhibition game.

The Blue Devils head into the 2009-2010 season with a lot to prove.

No. 6 Duke finally started to come together at the end of the year for the first time under head coach Joanne P. McCallie’s, recording wins over perennial powerhouses Tennessee and North Carolina in February and taking eventual Elite Eight participant Maryland into overtime before finally succumbing in the ACC Championship game. The offense was clicking, the patented press defense was flustering opponents and the Blue Devils were brimming with confidence.
