The Blue Devils have never lost in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

They don’t plan on breaking that streak tomorrow, especially not on their home court.

No. 6 Duke will play host to the 2010 NCAA Tournament first and second rounds at Cameron Indoor Stadium Saturday and Monday. The second-seeded Blue Devils (27-5) will play No. 15 seed Hampton Saturday at 2:30 p.m. Duke has won 12 straight NCAA games in Cameron by an average of 24.7 points and is 3-0 against 15th-seeded opponents.

After bringing in its fourth consecutive victory Wednesday, No. 6 Duke is looking to add another win to its record Sunday against Navy at 1 p.m. at Koskinen Stadium and hopes to grow further offensively in preparation for ACC play.

“We are looking to continue to build and grow our team on Sunday,” head coach Kerstin Kimel said. “We will be looking for our team to come out and play hard the way they have all season.”

Since rain forced the Blue Devils off the courts against William and Mary in Puerto Rico last Thursday, Duke has beaten its highest-ranked opponent of the season, defeating then-No.3 Notre Dame 5-2, junior Ellah Nze has been named the ACC Player of Week and the Blue Devils have climbed up to No. 5 in the latest rankings.

These achievements, however, will not result in a guaranteed win in the rescheduled match against the Tribe at the Courts in Williamsburg, Va. at 7 p.m. Sunday.

Coming off three straight wins against nonconference opponents, the Blue Devils were still looking for their first ACC victory Wednesday afternoon.

No. 6 Duke (8-1, 1-1 in the ACC) was more than up to the task, cruising to an 18-6 blowout win at Virginia Tech (2-6, 0-2) in Blacksburg. Senior midfielder Lindsay Gilbride led Duke with five goals, but 10 different Blue Devils were able to score against the Hokies— including four who notched their first tallies on the year.

With an all-time 11-0 record against Virginia Tech, including a 4-0 streak away from home, No. 6 Duke is looking to gain its fourth consecutive win and first ACC victory this season in a road contest against the Hokies.

After defeating two top-10 nonconference opponents last week, the Blue Devils (7-1, 0-1 in the ACC) are moving back to ACC play and setting their eyes on a win today at 4 p.m. in Blacksburg.

A No. 1 seed was not enough to get Duke through the second round of the NCAA Tournament last season. The Blue Devils hope home-court advantage will propel them to at least the Sweet 16 this time.

Duke received the No. 2 seed in the Memphis region and will play its first two games on a very familiar floor—the hardwood of Cameron Indoor Stadium.

“It’s good to have a home game, have our own fans here, sleep in your own bed,” senior Joy Cheek said.

Back in 2007, a surging Elizabeth Plotkin was finally finding her place in head coach Jamie Ashworth’s lineup. After struggling throughout a freshman year that she described in hindsight as “awful,” Plotkin exploded onto the scene as a sophomore and racked up 15 singles wins for Duke in the fall, losing only twice.

“She made a decision after her freshman year that she was going to be much improved on and off the court,” Ashworth said.
