A season during which Duke defeated nearly every team it should have and lost to only the best teams in the country came to an unsatisfying conclusion. The Blue Devils were beaten by No. 24 Tennessee 3-1 in the first round of the NCAA tournament Friday at Thompson-Boling Arena in Knoxville, Tenn.

Duke (27-6) struggled early and late against a Lady Volunteer squad buoyed by its home crowd, as Tennessee (24-7) took the first set 25-18. The Blue Devils dropped a close second before winning the third, only to fall behind in the final set for a decisive 25-12 loss.

Duke’s long ride in the ACC is finally over, and now, the Blue Devils kick off what they hope will be a long journey in the NCAA tournament.

After 20 conference matchups—including 17 wins—unseeded Duke (27-5) opens postseason play Friday at 7 p.m. against Tennessee (23-7) in Knoxville, Tenn. The Volunteers are also not seeded, but their campus is being used as one of 16 host sites for the tournament’s first round, meaning that Tennessee has the advantage of playing in front of its home crowd tonight.

A strong sense of urgency to win coupled with standout performances from libero Claire Smalzer and middle blocker Amanda Robertson allowed Duke to sweep in-state rivals N.C. State and North Carolina this weekend in Cameron Indoor Stadium.

About a month ago, Duke was upset by North Carolina in front of a large crowd at the Dean E. Smith Center in Chapel Hill, as the volleyball match led right into “Late Night with Roy,” the Tar Heel basketball program’s annual season curtain-raiser.

This weekend, the Blue Devils hope to give North Carolina a taste of its own medicine.

Duke’s final ACC road trip of the season ended as most of them have: with the Blue Devils recording two more conference wins against overmatched opponents.

Duke (24-5, 14-3 in the ACC) defeated Virginia Tech 3-1 Friday night in Blacksburg, Va., and recovered from an early deficit Saturday to take down Virginia in Charlottesville.

After a disappointing loss against No. 16 Florida State (22-2, 13-1 in the ACC) and a strong win against Miami (15-9, 8-6), Duke comes back to Durham both eager to work on what can be improved and proud of what it accomplished.

Playing on the road can be tough. When the road stretches from Wisconsin, to Massachusetts to Georgia to Maryland and back to the Carolinas, it can be even tougher.

After six full weekends playing away from home, Duke (21-4, 11-2 in the ACC) knows what playing outside the comforts of Cameron Indoor Stadium is like, and that experience will be tested as the team gears up for two away matches coming up against critical league opponents, No. 16 Florida State (21-2, 12-1) and Miami (14-9, 7-6).
