My girlfriend is a UNC alumna, and she is not what you would call a huge basketball fan. Sure, she was on Franklin Street after the Tar Heels won each of their national championships. And yeah, she did love Sean May. But she certainly could not pick the Wear twins out of a crowd, and when we recently saw Marcus Ginyard at a restaurant, the best she could do was, “Hey, that guy plays for Carolina!”

But this weekend, she looked at me and asked, “Are you jelly that UNC signed Harrison Barnes?”

At Tuesday’s weekly press conference, head coach David Cutcliffe fielded a pointed, but fair, question about getting ready for the Miami Hurricanes. “How do you get [the players] over Georgia Tech and over the injury situation against a team where you’d already be giving away athleticism even if you were healthy,” the reporter asked, “and sell them on a belief that they can go down [to Miami] and keep the stated goal of a bowl game alive?”

Friday night was enough to make you regret not going greek, almost.

I wish I could tell you something about being in the student section of Cameron Indoor Stadium on Greek Night. Head coach Mike Krzyzewski called it one of the best atmospheres to start the season since he’s been here.

But as fraternity and sorority members filed into Cameron following the first 300 non-greek students in line, I waited. And waited. And finally I went to the Dillo because it became pretty obvious that they weren’t fitting the 150 people in front of me into the student section.

Duke has played 45 football games since I’ve been a student here. I had never been as excited about one as I was last Saturday.

Now, it’s important to keep in mind that the Blue Devils won a grand total of one game in the 2006 and 2007 seasons, and that victory was on the road against Northwestern. In 2008, the David Cutcliffe Era got off to a blazing start, but Duke faded quickly once ACC play began.

So it’s November, and it’s still 70 degrees in Durham. That’s pretty cool. Unfortunately, you probably know that idle talk about weather is a sign that someone has nothing to say, which, in this case, is pretty much true.

There’s an old story that goes like this.

A group of senior professors in the English department is sitting in an office talking. The question arises: Who is the best teacher at Duke? The usual names come up in rapid succession: Frank Lentricchia, Stanley Fish, etc. Eventually, one of the distinguished faculty members pipes up. “You’re all wrong,” he says. “The best teacher at Duke is Mike Krzyzewski.”

The reply: “Hell, if I could choose all my students, I’d be the best teacher at Duke, too!”

As of right now, Duke’s record stands at 5-3, 3-1 in the ACC with just two wins needed to become bowl-eligible.

But the only record that matters to me and other compulsive gamblers is 4-1-1—the Blue Devils’ record against the spread. No matter how you look at it, Duke has performed up to head coach David Cutcliffe’s expectations and basically no one else’s.
