After bookending the first half with beautiful goals and dominating play in between, Duke (13-6) seemed poised to coast to a first-round victory over Winthrop in the NCAA tournament. A surprise second-half goal by the Eagles reversed the tide, however, and a senior’s first-career score was needed to propel the Blue Devils to a 3-2 victory Thursday at Koskinen Stadium.

Early Monday evening, the Blue Devils waited in anticipation as they listened to ESPNews to learn of their seeding in the NCAA tournament. Although the team had hoped for a first-round bye, Duke instead will have to play Winthrop Thursday at Koskinen Stadium in the tournament’s first round.

However, the team can seek solace in the fact that it is playing the first round at home, where it was undefeated this year except for an overtime loss to N.C State.

For the third straight year, Duke was sent home in the opening round of the ACC tournament, this time falling 1-0 to Boston College in overtime. After 95 minutes of scoreless play through the heavy rain and wind of Tropical Storm Ida, the Eagles scored with a header to advance to play No. 20 N.C. State—which defeated No. 2 North Carolina—in the tournament semifinals.

Coming into the 2009 season, no one expected the Blue Devils to start 4-0 and carry the momentum into a 12-5 regular season.

After losing four starting seniors, one of whom was All-American and ACC Offensive Player of the Year Mike Grella, No. 15 Duke was supposed to be heading into a down year. But with the emergence of two freshmen, forward Ryan Finley and defender Andrew Wenger, along with greater team chemistry, the Blue Devils were able to surprise some teams.

Two teams took the field with a chance to win the ACC championship Friday night in Winston-Salem in Duke’s regular season finale. Unfortunately for the No. 11 Blue Devils, they couldn’t keep pace with No. 4 Wake Forest as the Demon Deacons (13-3-2, 5-2-1 in the ACC) clinched a share of the regular season conference title with a 3-0 win at Spry Stadium.

With postseason seeding implications on the line, the No. 11 Blue Devils (12-4-0, 4-3-0 in the ACC) wrap up the regular season with a showdown at No. 4 Wake Forest (12-3-2, 4-2-1) tonight at 7 p.m..

Duke, currently with 12 points in the ACC, could top the standings and win the conference title with a victory Friday and a loss or tie by North Carolina. The Tar Heels, on 13 points, play Clemson, the ACC’s worst team with only six points.

On Senior Night at Koskinen Stadium, the Blue Devil underclassmen stole the show as  No. 16 Duke (12-4-0, 4-3-0 in the ACC) routed Virginia Tech 4-1. The Hokies (5-10-2, 2-5-0) became the Blue Devils’ fifth victim in as many games.
