I'm sorry, but a student threatening to transfer is taking this a little too far. Now that this merger happened, where all the normally programmed activities and events from the multicultural center and international house will continue to exist, a student wants to transfer? I am aware that what they did is disrespectful, insulting and careless, but if your organization is the only thing you cared about Duke, and now that it's been reduced you want to leave, then you chose the wrong school. I myself have been dissatisfied with Duke's academic advising and greek life policies, but there are still great aspects about Duke.
Duke f'ed up on this, and hopefully they'll do something to fix it, but the system is only as perfect as the people in it, and I'm sure you're aware that many other sectors have had job cuts too.
To Yankees Fan and dtown,
Do you consider yourself racists? I'm pretty sure you wouldn't have the courage to say what you have posted here under your own name. It is part of the mission of Duke to prepare the next generation of leaders to solve the many problems in our society. The very little socialization you have received while at this university should teach you that racism is one of these problems.
So let me introduce to you a concept called institutionalized racism. It is not the responsibility of minorities to just shut up and deal with the inequality and discrimination that continues to exist because of people like you. Try to put yourself in our shoes, acknowledge the privilege afforded you by this hierarchical social structure. You don't have work for progress if you don't want to, but I ask you not to stand in our way.
To Duke White Male,
The university is cutting two of the four staff members who formerly worked for the multicultural center. Don't take what the administration say at face value, do you think its possible for all the programs to continue with half the work force. There are other ways to cut costs for the university, programs for minorities should not be the first to go.

There are students organizing to ask the administration to repeal this decision. Here is a link to our petition if you think the merger is a bad idea: http://spreadsheets.google.com/viewform?formkey=dEVPVDNqcGVnVlczYnNmR0dW...
