Fact Checker again.

Let's see....

A) we had a decision to cut back housekeeping in the dorms hitting on students directly.

B) We had a decision to merge International House with the Multicultural Center and move the new entity to Siberia, another decision affecting students. Not to mention the loss of dedicated staff, the first layoffs reported in the Chronicle.

C) Today we learn the pharmacy serving students will close. And more layoffs of people who were directly helping students.

Does anyone see a trend here?

Has anyone heard of any cutbacks involving the highest paid employees, administrators or faculty? If you can send me a list, I will be quiet for a week!!!!!

In the five years, three months since President Brodhead arrived, we've added two vice presidents and one vice provost. I do not follow Duke Health as closely, and there is a separate budget there, but I believe there is one new Senior Vice Chancellor and two Vice Chancellors, correct me if I am wrong.

Let's cut some of that bloat.

When I first saw this in the print Chronicle today, I thought 1) "Oh great, now students will be traversing the hospital in search of a pharmacy, while toting around whatever illness and contagions they have." And 2) "I hope Steve Almond will still be somewhere in Student Health."

Steve is always smiling and truly loves serving students. He is by far one of the nicest employees at Duke. Over my past four years at Duke, I didn't visit Student Health too often, just the occasional physical or travel shots. But somehow the nurses, receptionists, or even the PAs managed to make the visits extra stressful and frustrating. But just as I'm about to leave, I usually stop by the pharmacy to pick up prescription if necessary, and Steve always brightens up the experience. He is kind and patient with students and doesn't treat us like many other faculty/staff/employees on campus. He is also very thorough in his explanation of the medication he is handing out, and always asks if we have questions- all in a friendly and heartwarming manner.

Not to mention, I've never received that kind of attention at the outpatient pharmacy or any retail location.

Steve is without a doubt one of the best assets at Student Health, and to see him go is absurd. Is there a need for all three receptionists? Usually at least two of them are deep in conversation about a tv show when I've ever been there.
