Woman sexually assaulted near medical center
Duke University Police Department is investigating a report from a woman who told authorities she was sexually assaulted Thursday around 7:30 p.m. near Erwin Road. She was treated and released from WakeMed in Raleigh, according to a statement from DUPD.
Duke students were notified of the reported incident via e-mail at 3:39 a.m.
The 21-year-old woman told police that she left Duke Hospital and was near a parking lot off Elba Street when she was approached by a man, forced to the ground and assaulted. She then contacted both Durham Police Department and DUPD.
"The Duke University Police Department is working with the victim and following up on leads," Aaron Graves, associate vice president for campus safety and security, said in a statement. "The safety of our students, employees and visitors is our top priority, and we are stepping up patrols in areas near campus."
According to the statement from DUPD, no arrests have been made related to the incident. The suspect is described as a large black male, dark skin, very short hair or bald and some facial hair around his mouth. He was wearing a puffy yellow jacket.
DUPD Major Gloria Graham said the woman was not a Duke student.
