The arraignment hearing for David Alan Coolidge, Jr., the second-year medical student who has been charged with one count of statutory rape of a person who is 13, 14 or 15 and taking indecent liberties with a child, is set for the week of Sept. 8, according to the Durham district attorney's office. At the arraignment, Coolidge will enter a plea concerning the charges against him.

A probable cause hearing for the case was held earlier this summer, Durham officials said, and his case has been transferred to Superior Court.

A resident adviser at the University for a number of years, Coolidge served as the head RA for Blackwell Dormitory last year and as an RA in Trent Dormitory in previous years.

The charges stem from an alleged May 25 encounter between Coolidge and a 13-year-old boy, whom he apparently coached in a local youth soccer league.

According to the search warrant, the boy spent a large portion of Memorial Day weekend with Coolidge, including at least one night in Coolidge's summer residence in Southgate Dormitory. Coolidge allegedly sodomized the boy three times later that night, the warrant stated.

Coolidge, 28, is currently free on bond.

Man charged with assault: Robert Covington, 30, of no listed address, was arrested Aug. 15 and charged with assault of a government officer and resisting, delaying or obstructing an officer after he allegedly attempted a strong-arm robbery of two visitors on East Campus in front of the West Duke Building and pushed Corporal John Dailey of the Duke University Police Department following Dailey's arrival on the scene.

Captain Charles Nordan of Campus Police said Covington allegedly approached the couple, demanded money and hinted that he had a concealed weapon. The woman called 911 on her cellular phone, Nordan continued, and Dailey arrived on the scene within two minutes of the call.

A chase ensued, and Covington was apprehended on Main Street by Duke and Durham police.

A court date has been set for Sept. 2.
