Heaps, Whitfield go early in MLS draft

Duke soccer stars Jay Heaps and Evan Whitfield were both selected in the first round of yesterday's Major League Soccer draft held in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Heaps, who graduated and left the University in the fall, was the second overall pick, taken by the Miami Fusion.

The Fusion, a second-year franchise, traded up with Kansas City to have a shot at the Longmeadow, Mass., native.

Whitfield was taken 11th by the Chicago Fire, last season's MLS champions.

Virginia's Jason Moore was the No. 1 pick, going to the D.C. United.
