Finley suspended indefinitely

Amid the hoopla of Duke’s 2-1 first-round win over Coastal Carolina Thursday was a conspicuous absence on the field—Ryan Finley.

Finley has been suspended from the team indefinitely, the athletic department announced in a press release.

When asked why Finley would be suspended at Duke’s most important time of the year, head coach John Kerr was curt.

“Just a little bit of a disciplinary issue,” he said.

The short explanation issued from the sports information department stated that the sophomore “has been suspended indefinitely for violation of team rules, effective immediately.”

The athletic department had no other comment.

Finley is Duke’s leading goal-scorer and the NCAA’s leading scorer on a per game basis. He won ACC Offensive Player of the Year, becoming just the second Blue Devil to ever take the award. Before his suspension, he was tied with Ali Curtis and Pato Gutierrez for Duke’s single-season goal record.

Kerr was short when discussing if Finley would be allowed to return for Duke’s second round game or any other matches the Blue Devils might play.

“I don’t know yet. We haven’t gone there yet, and we’ll see.”
