The Ad in Question

Only one advertisement from the Apr. 6 issue of The Chronicle continues to attract attention--the one that asked in a large font "What Does A Social Disaster Sound Like?"

The full-page presentation included introductory and concluding statements bookending anonymous student quotes.

"Regardless of the results of the police investigation, what is apparent everyday now is the anger and fear of many students who know themselves to be objects of racism and sexism," read an except from the introduction.

Some students quotes were vivid.

"We go to school with racist classmates, we go to gym with people who are racists... It's part of the experience," read one quote.

"Being a big, black man, it's hard to walk anywhere at night, and not have a campus police car slowly drive by me," read another.

Another said the campus conversations did not have the right priorities.

"...No one is really talking about how to keep the young woman herself central to this conversation, how to keep her humanity before us... She doesn't seem to be visible in this," read the excerpt. The conclusion shed some light on the sponsors' motivations.

"We're turning up the volume in a moment when some of the most vulnerable among us are being asked to quiet down while we wait."

The advertisement is still viewable online at a page hosted by the Department of African and African-American Studies.
