Defensive back T.J. Douglas kicked off Duke football team

Duke head coach David Cutcliffe announced Sunday that he has dismissed redshirt sophomore cornerback T.J. Douglas from the program, putting a damper on a big weekend for the Blue Devils.

Douglas was arrested Sunday for driving while impaired, according to data maintained by the Durham County Sheriff's Office. He was released with no bond set, as first reported by Steve Wiseman of the Durham Herald-Sun.

In March, Cutcliffe suspended Douglas and redshirt sophomore wide receiver Terrence Alls indefinitely from game action for failing to "uphold the academic, athletic and community standards required of a member of the Blue Devil program."

“Defensive back T.J. Douglas has been dismissed from the program,” Cutcliffe said on a Sunday teleconference with reporters. “There will be no further comment on that development. In regards to Terrence Alls, he will remain on an indefinite suspension from game competition.”

Douglas made 12 appearances as a redshirt freshman in 2014, recording one tackle.

Duke's secondary has put together a strong start to the season, headlined by the play of redshirt senior safety Jeremy Cash. Safety DeVon Edwards and cornerbacks Breon Borders and Deondre Singleton have shut down opposing offenses through the air, and after a season-ending injury to junior cornerback Bryon Fields during the offseason, the emergence of cornerbacks Alonzo Saxton II and true freshman Jeremy McDuffie has added depth to the unit.

The Blue Devils received 18 votes in this week's AP Poll after upsetting then-No. 20 Georgia Tech 34-20 Saturday at Wallace Wade Stadium.
