On David Stern’s 30th anniversary of being NBA commissioner, he will step down from the powerful position. And a Duke graduate will take his place.
Adam Silver, Trinity ‘84, will be the NBA’s next commissioner beginning on Feb. 1, 2014, current commissioner David Stern announced Thursday. Silver has worked in the NBA front office for 20 years and has been a deputy commissioner and the the league’s chief operating officer for the last six years. After leaving Duke with a political science degree, Silver graduated from University of Chicago Law School in 1988.
The New York City resident played a critical role as president NBA Entertainment, which launched NBA TV in his time at the helm.
“I decided that things are in great shape and there’s an organization in place that will ultimately be led by Adam that is totally prepared to take it to the next level,” Stern said in Thursday’s press conference.
