Facing potential disbarment, Mike Nifong took the stand in his own defense Friday and announced his intentions to resign from his position as Durham's District Attorney.
"My community has suffered enough," Nifong said.
Nifong was testifying on his own behalf against the North Carolina State Bar's allegations that he lied to court and bar investigators, withheld DNA information and made misleading remarks in reference to the three formerly-indicted Duke lacrosse players.
"It has become increasingly apparent, during the course of this week, in some ways that it might not have been before, that my presence as the district attorney in Durham is not furthering the cause of justice," Nifong said.
